Four mugs. Four glazes. Four reasons to put the kettle on.

All four are made in Mino-yaki (美濃焼) from Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramic region, but each speaks in a different voice. The two CHIPS stackable mugs in green and yellow are clean, quiet and modern: a straight-walled form designed to stack neatly and be reached for without thought. The two Nagara series mugs from Minoru Touki in Toki City tell a different story. The Drops mug carries a namari-gake (釉垂れ) controlled drip glaze: trails of colour that ran during firing and froze, each mug with its own particular movement. The Aigetsu Shiro (藍月白) mug layers soft indigo and white in a glaze that suggests a moon on still water. Both Nagara mugs are made from aka-tsuchi (赤土) iron-rich red clay and develop a subtle kan'nyu crackle glaze over time. Season with starchy water before first use.
