Ketchup in Japan is not an afterthought. It is the base of omurice (オムライス), the sauce in napolitan pasta, the essential partner of hamburg steak. The bottle shape, red and familiar, belongs to the vocabulary of Japanese home cooking in a way that most British households would not expect.

Made in Arita-yaki (有田焼), Saga Prefecture, Japan's original porcelain tradition developed in the early 17th century. The fine shiroji (白地) porcelain body and precise glossy overglaze enamels are characteristic of Arita craft at its most playful: technically serious, deliberately unserious in form. This chopstick rest reproduces that bottle in fine shiroji (白地) Arita porcelain, about 3cm tall, with the glossy overglaze and crisp detailing that make Arita ware recognisable at any scale. Works individually or as part of a set with the other condiment rests.
