Tartar sauce in Japan is serious business. It goes with ebi furai (エビフライ, breaded prawns), menchi katsu and any number of yoshoku dishes where crispy and creamy are the point. The bottle shape is immediately recognisable to anyone who has eaten at a Japanese family restaurant.
Made in Arita-yaki (有田焼), Saga Prefecture, Japan's original porcelain tradition developed in the early 17th century. The fine shiroji (白地) porcelain body and precise glossy overglaze enamels are characteristic of Arita craft at its most playful: technically serious, deliberately unserious in form. This chopstick rest reproduces that bottle in fine Arita porcelain, about 3cm tall, with glossy overglaze capturing the familiar label colours. Keeps chopstick tips off the table and starts a conversation. Works individually or as part of a set with the other condiment rests.
