At a glance

- Takaoka Doki (高岡銅器), METI-designated traditional craft, Toyama Prefecture
- By Nousaku (能作), founded 1916; sand cast and hand-finished
- Tsubomi (蕾, bud) petal form; clear, pure tone; 3.2cm wide, 4.4cm tall

The Tsubomi is the smallest of the Nousaku wind chimes and the most delicate. Tsubomi (蕾) means bud, and the petal form earns the name: tight, precise, poised.

Made by Nousaku (能作) in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, founded in 1916. Takaoka's metalworking tradition dates to 1609, when the Maeda clan invited craftsmen to develop the castle town; the city now produces around 90% of Japan's copperware. Takaoka Doki (高岡銅器) is designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy as a traditional craft. Each piece is sand cast and hand-finished. The Tsubomi is sand cast in brass and shaped like a flower bud, the petals held just before opening. The compact form produces a clear, pure tone that is bright without being sharp: the note Nousaku's resonance-tuning skills, once reserved for temple bells, now bring to the home. At 3.2cm wide and 4.4cm tall it is small enough to hang in almost any space. Available in gold and silver. The kind of object that fills a room with a sound larger than its size suggests.
