At a glance

- Hasami-yaki (波佐見焼), Nagasaki Prefecture; by Kihara (キハラ), Arita
- Symbol of abundance and prosperity, wave Seigaiha (青海波) pattern in gosu underglaze blue
- 15cm wide; dishwasher and microwave safe; pairs with other KOMON patterns

A plate patterned with the oldest symbol of the ocean.

Seigaiha overlapping arcs like fish scales or cresting waves is one of Japan's most recognisable auspicious patterns, used in textiles, architecture and ceramics for over a thousand years. It represents the sea, and by extension abundance, continuity, and the hope that good fortune will keep returning like the tide.

Kihara renders it in deep indigo blue on white Hasami porcelain via a specialist printing method that preserves the characteristic unevenness of gosu pigment run your finger across the surface and you will feel the pattern beneath your touch.

At 15cm, it pairs with the arrow feather and chrysanthemum plates to build a table setting that tells a story. Equally at home holding a few squares of dark chocolate and a handful of nuts as it is on a formally laid dinner table.

Made in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture. Dishwasher and microwave safe.
