Gold leaf caught in glass, arranged in a fan shape: the rest catches the light in a way that feels considered rather than showy.
Tsugaruvidro (津軽びいどろ) is a glass craft from Aomori Prefecture that draws on the colours of the local sea, sky and seasons. Each piece is mouth-blown and hand-formed by craftsmen; the layered coloured glass shifts as the light moves across the surface, and individual differences between pieces are the mark of hand production. This rest is from the Kinsai (金彩, gold decoration) series. Deep coloured glass is formed in a fan shape and gold leaf (金箔) is added within, creating a surface where the gold appears to float inside the glass rather than sitting on top of it. The effect at the table is warm and quietly elegant, well-suited to Japanese tableware and any setting where the small details matter. Each rest is hand-formed at 35mm across and 13mm tall; individual differences in colour distribution and gold placement are part of the character of hand production. Available in Peony (deep red), Green and Navy.
