A single brass circle. A small hole at its centre. Nothing else. The Nousaku incense holder asks very little of the shelf and gives back a warm, quiet presence that only improves with age.
Nousaku (能作) has been casting in Takaoka, Toyama, since 1916. Takaoka's metalworking tradition dates to 1609, when the Maeda clan invited craftsmen to develop the castle town; the city now produces around 90% of Japan's copperware. Takaoka Doki (高岡銅器) is designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy as a traditional craft, and Nousaku's fourth-generation foundry works within that tradition whilst designing objects for contemporary homes. This holder is cast in solid brass, which means the weight is satisfying in the hand and the surface develops a gentle patina with use, shifting from bright gold to a deeper, warmer tone over time.
Small enough to sit anywhere. The kind of object that looks deliberate on a shelf rather than accumulated.
