A long, narrow dish, raked in fine lines, with a single raised stone shaped section standing at one end. The design takes its cue from the rock garden at Ryōan ji, Kyoto's most celebrated garden, where raked gravel and a handful of stones have been read and re read by visitors for centuries. That stone shaped top lifts out entirely, which makes emptying the ash a genuinely easy job rather than an afterthought.
This comes from Kousaido, a Kyoto maker founded in 1994, rooted in kōdō, the classical Japanese art of appreciating fragrance, a tradition Kyoto has kept for over four centuries. It is built long enough to hold a full length incense stick safely, propped rather than laid flat.
At 14.5cm long, it sits neatly on a shelf, a windowsill, or beside a chair, a small piece of stillness on the table.
