At a glance
- White peach: fresh and juicy with woody balance; airy, not sweet
- 40 sticks, burns approx. 25 minutes each, low smoke
- By Nippon Kodo (日本香堂), lineage tracing to 1575
Freshly cut white peach in a cool room. This is the impression the stick creates: fruit that is light and airy rather than jammy or sweet, balanced with a woody base that keeps the scent grounded. More elegant than it sounds, and better than most fruit-based incenses that err towards confection.
Kayuragi (かゆらぎ) is a modern incense series from Nippon Kodo (日本香堂), a house whose lineage traces to 1575 and the imperial court of Kyoto. The name joins kaori (香り, fragrance) with yuragi (揺らぎ, a gentle wavering), suggesting the way smoke drifts and transforms a room. Each slim stick burns for around 25 minutes with low, soft smoke, designed for everyday home use rather than ceremony. Nippon Kodo's production follows centuries-old methods: aromatic powders hand-kneaded into paste, rolled into slender sticks, dried naturally to preserve the oils.
