Some vases earn their place on a shelf by what they hold. This one earns it by what it does with light.
Kutani-yaki (九谷焼) was first produced in the city of Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, in the mid-17th century and is designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy as a traditional craft. It is known for vivid overglaze enamel colours, gold accents and pictorial surfaces whose detail and richness are difficult to achieve in any other ceramic tradition. This vase is made by Hakuho Kiln (博峰窯) in Nomi City, Ishikawa, at the centre of the Kutani-yaki region. The defining technique is Yusai (釉彩), a glaze method that builds translucent colour in layers, producing a depth and luminosity that catches the light differently depending on the angle. The upright form with a narrow opening is suited to ikebana-style arrangements where single stems or a small number of branches are the point; it is equally refined when left empty on a shelf. The high-temperature firing locks the layers of translucent colour into a surface that is smooth to the touch but visually complex. Available in Medium and Large.
