This Kyujo Orin “Kotorin” is a delicate item, so please handle it gently. Ring it lightly for a calm, resonant sound, and keep the clear protective sheet on the base in place, as it helps absorb vibration. Do not disassemble or modify the product, and avoid using too much force on the hammer. For cleaning, simply wipe with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive materials.

Over time, the metal may gradually change in colour. This is a natural feature of the material and part of its charm, reflecting the traditional Japanese appreciation of aged beauty.

A small bird sits on the handle, completely still, whilst the tone rings out beneath it. Kotori (小鳥) means little bird, and the name suits both the object and the feeling of the sound.

Made by Yamaguchi Kyujo (山口久乗) in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, founded in 1907. Takaoka's casting heritage dates to 1609 and is designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy as a traditional craft. Yamaguchi Kyujo is the leading maker of orin (おりん) bronze bells in Japan, whose tones can be heard in schools, railway stations and aboard Shinkansen trains. Each bell is cast, filed and tuned by ear: struck, listened to, adjusted, until the tone sustains for up to a minute from a single gentle tap. Research has associated the resulting 1/f yuragi (1/fゆらぎ) with the promotion of alpha brain waves and a sense of calm. The Kotori bell is cast in brass with a charming bird-shaped handle that is equally at home as a table call bell or a decorative object that happens to produce one of the most calming sounds in a room.
