At a glance
• Rock the cradle-like body to sound it, no separate mallet needed
• Clear, lingering tone carries easily across a room
• Beak-shaped slot holds a note or name card between uses
Kotorin turns a bell into a small act of communication.
Rather than reaching for a separate mallet, gently rock the cradle-like body. A natural hematite pendulum moves against the orin inside, producing a clear tone with a long, softly fading resonance. Its sound is designed around 1/f fluctuation, a pattern of variation also found in rhythms and sounds in nature.
The sound carries well enough to work as a call bell in an entrance, living space or counter, but Kotorin has a second purpose once the ringing stops. The small slot at the bird-like beak can hold a message or name card, turning it into a quiet way to leave a note for a visitor, customer or someone at home.
The orin is made from copper alloy with a gold-plated finish, paired with an aluminium frame and natural hematite pendulum. At 13cm long, it is compact enough for an entrance table, bedside surface or desk while remaining visually distinctive between uses.
Made in Takaoka by Yamaguchi Kyujo, using the metalworking skills of the city's long-established copperware tradition.
