Gentle Cleaning: Before first use, gently wash with a soft sponge and mild, neutral detergent, then rinse with warm water. After each use, wash promptly with mild detergent, then immediately wipe dry with a soft, clean cloth. Avoid air-drying, which can lead to spots.

Avoid Harsh Environments: Do not use in dishwashers, dish dryers, microwave ovens, or conventional ovens. Never subject the bowl to direct flame or boiling water, as extreme temperatures can damage the finish.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid soaking in water or storing in humid conditions.

Acidic Foods: Avoid placing highly acidic foods (such as lemon or vinegar) inside the bowl.

Health Note: While rare, natural lacquer may cause a skin reaction in some individuals. If you experience any itching or irritation, please discontinue use and consult a specialist.

Unique Character: As each piece is finished with natural lacquer on authentic timber, minor variations in wood grain, knots, and colour density are natural characteristics of the craft—no two bowls are exactly alike.

At a glance

- Aizu lacquerware (会津漆器), Fukushima Prefecture
- Hasori silhouette with sweeping outward curves; Akita castor aralia (sen) wood
- 12cm wide, 7cm tall; hand-lacquered in deep red

Pick up an urushi lacquer bowl and the first thing you notice is how little it weighs. The second thing is how it keeps the heat inside without passing it to your hands. These two qualities together are what made lacquerware Japan's everyday table companion long before ceramics were widely available.

This soup bowl is made in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, a city whose lacquerware tradition dates back centuries and whose craftsmen continue to work in the same careful way today. The wood is Akita castor aralia (sen), grown in the cold of Hokkaido, which produces a particularly light and fine-grained timber well suited to thin-walled bowls. The Hasori (端反り) shape features gracefully sweeping curves that flare outward at the rim, making the bowl easy to lift to the mouth with both hands in the traditional Japanese way. The deep red urushi finish is built from multiple hand-applied coats, each one dried and polished before the next is added.
