Wood holds warmth differently from ceramic. Not the transferred warmth of hot liquid, but something that lives in the material itself, present before anything is poured in. This is what makes a wooden bowl feel different in the hands from the first moment.

This bowl is made by Shirasagi Mokkogei (白鷺木工) in Yamanaka Onsen, Ishikawa Prefecture, a workshop in its third generation specialising in Yamanaka Shikki (山中漆器), a METI-designated lathe-turning tradition with a history spanning over 400 years in the mountain forests of Ishikawa. Each bowl is turned on a lathe until the walls reach just 1 to 2 millimetres, a process that demands exceptional steadiness and judgement. The finish is fuki-urushi (拭き漆), wiped lacquer applied and buffed by hand to bring out the wood's natural grain rather than obscure it. The result is light enough to feel almost weightless, warm to hold, and quietly beautiful. Available in beige and muted green.
