Postcard, Moustached Daruma (PPF-268)

At a glance

• A bold moustache gives the traditional Japanese Daruma doll an unexpected expression
• Fluorescent pink-orange and geometric patterns recreate the character of retro printmaking

This Daruma has an unusually impressive moustache.

The traditional round Japanese good-luck figure is reimagined with a broad, curved moustache, sharply defined eyebrows and a robe covered in colourful geometric shapes.

Daruma dolls are associated with determination and achieving goals. Here, the familiar symbol takes on a humorous personality through simplified shapes and deliberately imperfect-looking print textures.

The design originates from rubber-stamp printmaking and is reproduced using retro printing, with slight misalignment and faded areas contributing to its distinctive finish.
