At a glance
• Traditional Arare hailstone pattern gives the kettle the distinctive dotted surface associated with Nambu Tekki
• Unlined cast iron is designed to boil water directly over flame rather than simply hold brewed tea
• A protective mineral layer gradually develops inside with use and should be preserved rather than scrubbed away
This is a true Japanese cast-iron kettle, made for boiling the water itself rather than steeping tea inside.
Because the interior is unlined, water comes directly into contact with the cast iron as it heats. That is the defining difference between a traditional Nambu Tekki kettle and an enamel-lined cast-iron teapot: the kettle becomes part of preparing the water, rather than simply holding the finished tea.
Across the exterior is Arare, meaning “hailstone”, the traditional raised-dot pattern closely associated with Nambu ironware. The texture gives the substantial cast-iron body its immediately recognisable character.
The inside is designed to develop with use. Minerals in the water gradually form a pale layer known as yuaka. Rather than removing it, the layer should be left in place because it helps protect the iron from rust.
With a 1.2L capacity, it can prepare hot water for several cups of English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Japanese tea or coffee.
Made by Oigen in Oshu, Iwate, a cast-iron foundry established in 1852.
- The handle will also get hot during use. Please use mittens.
