An onion, in brass, that rings when the breeze touches it. There is a particular kind of wit in Japanese craft that takes an everyday object completely seriously and produces something genuinely beautiful from it. This is that.

Made by Nousaku (能作) in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, founded in 1916. Takaoka's metalworking tradition dates to 1609, when the Maeda clan invited craftsmen to develop the castle town; the city now produces around 90% of Japan's copperware. Takaoka Doki (高岡銅器) is designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy as a traditional craft. Each piece is sand cast and hand-finished. The Onion (玉ねぎ) wind chime captures the layered, rounded silhouette of the vegetable in sand-cast brass, hand-finished to smooth curves and precise weight. The form produces a warm, resonant tone with more body than the flat disc of the UFO: the layered shape seems to hold the sound for a moment before releasing it. Available in black and gold; the black finish gives the piece a striking graphic quality, whilst the gold sits closer to traditional furin aesthetics.
