At 26cm, this plate has enough presence to anchor a table. A roasted fish, a pile of vegetables, a shared arrangement of smaller dishes: the broad surface handles all of it, and the Shigaraki clay does the rest.
Made by Yamasho Touki (ヤマ庄陶器) in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture. Shigaraki-yaki (信楽焼) is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, a group of kiln sites with unbroken production histories stretching back over a thousand years. The MINGEI series reinterprets Shigaraki folk craft for modern life: familiar in character, contemporary in sensibility. The glaze is a natural speckled finish whose stones add surface expression and whose colour shifts where the flame passed through the kiln. No two pieces share the same finish. This larger plate in the MINGEI series has the same speckled, naturally fired surface as the 20.5cm version but the scale gives it more weight at the table. The broad, slightly irregular rim and generous depth suit main courses or sharing platters comfortably. Available in yellow, navy and white. Used alongside the 20.5cm plate from the same series, the two sizes work naturally together.
