The larger MINGEI plate makes the character of Shigaraki stoneware even more noticeable.

Its surface is distinctly tactile rather than softly textured. Small stone particles sit within the speckled glaze, giving the plate a coarse, irregular feel that can be sensed immediately in the hand. Firing adds another layer of variation, changing the colour, speckling and glaze movement from one piece to the next.

The series is built around Modern Mingei, bringing the warmth and material character of folk craft into a form that feels at home on a contemporary table. The result works particularly well in a modern UK setting: natural, tactile and expressive, but restrained enough to sit comfortably alongside simple glassware, linen and everyday cutlery.

At 26cm, the extra space makes a real difference. It suits a full roast dinner, pasta, curry, grilled fish or a generous salad, while the broader surface also works for vegetables, antipasti, pastries or smaller sharing dishes in the centre of the table.
