Soft cloth or soft sponge recommended for cleaning

Before first use, rinse and dry gently; a mild smell of lacquer may fade naturally with use.

Wash with a soft sponge and avoid abrasive scrubbers or powders.

Do not use in the microwave, oven, grill, or dishwasher unless specifically stated.

Avoid prolonged soaking, direct sunlight, and high humidity.

Handle carefully, as lacquered surfaces can scratch or chip if struck.

Special

At a glance

- Echizen Shikki (越前漆器), Fukui Prefecture, METI-designated traditional craft
- Hand-applied lacquer; simple line pattern on each bowl
- Sold as a black and red pair, 14.4cm wide, suited to soup, rice or side dishes

There is a particular pleasure in a bowl that does not clatter. Urushi lacquer gives the surface a warmth and quiet that ceramic cannot, and insulates gently so the bowl stays comfortable in the hands through a full bowl of miso.

These bowls are made in the Echizen Shikki (越前漆器) tradition of Fukui Prefecture, a lacquerware craft with roots stretching back to the 6th century and designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy as a traditional craft. The finish is hon-urushi te-nuri (本漆手塗り), meaning the lacquer is hand-applied in thin successive coats rather than sprayed, giving the surface its depth, warmth, and softly refined sheen. The line pattern adds a calm visual rhythm without competing with food. Sold as a black and red pair, they are well suited to a shared table and make a considered gift for a couple or household.
