A simple, long dish in celadon, the pale blue green glaze that has coloured East Asian ceramics for centuries. A single hole through the dish holds an incense stick upright as it burns, and the flame puts itself out naturally once it reaches that point, a small, sensible safety feature built into the design rather than an afterthought.

Kousaido is a Kyoto incense house founded in 1994 in the city's Karasuma district, working within kōdō, the fragrance tradition Kyoto has practised for more than 400 years.

At 15.2cm long, it suits a shelf, a bedside table, or anywhere a stick of incense needs somewhere safe to rest.
