At a glance
- For people who prefer the smell of a fresh apple to a baked one, no cinnamon involved
- Crisp, sweet and slightly sour, an unusually fresh note over a sandalwood base
- 40 sticks, each burning 20 to 30 minutes
- By Kousaido, Kyoto's Karasuma district, working within kōdō, the city's fragrance tradition
Most apple scents in the UK go straight to pie: cinnamon, pastry, baked warmth. This one doesn't. It's crisp apple as it is cut, sweet and slightly sour at once, an unusually fresh note to find sitting alongside sandalwood.
Each stick starts as a hand-kneaded paste on a base of white sandalwood, worked with natural woods, resins and herbs, then rolled thin and dried slowly. Kousaido, the Kyoto maker behind it, was founded in 1994 in the Karasuma district, continuing kōdō, the fragrance tradition the city has practised for over 400 years.
Forty sticks come in the box, along with a small holder to burn them in.
Apple, cut fresh, no pastry in sight.
