A bowl patterned with Japan's most architectural motif.

The koshi lattice is everywhere in traditional Japanese design: in the sliding screens (shoji) that filter light in old houses, in the wooden grilles of temple gates, in the geometric weave of washi paper. Here, Kihara renders it in ko-some style the slightly absorbed, freehand blue-on-white aesthetic of early Japanese porcelain, before precision printing made everything too even.

The rice bowl form (11.5cm diameter, 7cm deep) is a versatile everyday vessel. The lattice pattern rewards the act of holding and looking something that happens naturally when you eat from a bowl rather than a plate. For porridge, for soup, for rice, for whatever the morning asks of it.
