Hundreds of small chrysanthemum forms turn this KOMON plate into something much more graphic than a conventional floral design.

The chrysanthemum, or kiku, has longstanding associations with longevity, health and wellbeing in Japan. Here the motif is reduced and repeated across the porcelain, so its meaning remains while the overall effect feels clean and contemporary.

KIHARA developed KOMON's pad-printing method to avoid the flatness of ordinary transfer decoration. Slight changes in the density of the gosu blue and subtle relief remain visible across the pattern, giving the tightly repeated design more character up close.

At 24cm wide and 3.5cm high, the gently deeper form works well for pasta, curry, a cooked breakfast, salads with dressing or other everyday mains where a completely flat plate is less practical.

It also pairs naturally with the smaller KOMON side plates when building a mixed-pattern setting.
