At a glance
• Silver foil beneath the glaze creates a softly luminous metallic depth
• Twin cranes symbolise longevity and enduring partnership, giving the vase particular meaning as a gift
• Rounded form has enough presence to display with flowers or on its own
Silver, deep blue and a pair of cranes give this Kutani Ware vase a presence that goes beyond a simple flower vessel.
Using the Ginsai technique, silver foil sits beneath transparent or coloured glaze rather than remaining exposed on the surface. The result is a softer metallic depth that catches the light without looking overly bright.
Across the vase, a pair of cranes forms the main composition. In Japanese decorative arts, cranes are closely associated with longevity and good fortune, while paired cranes also carry associations with a long and harmonious partnership.
That symbolism gives the vase a natural place in gifting, particularly for weddings, anniversaries and milestone celebrations, while the design remains understated enough to live with long after the occasion itself.
At approximately 17.5cm across, the rounded body has enough scale for a modest flower arrangement, but the silver surface and crane design also make it visually complete when displayed empty.
