At a glance

- Kutani-yaki (九谷焼), Ishikawa Prefecture, METI-designated traditional craft
- Twin cranes (双鶴) amid pines and clouds; symbols of longevity and marital harmony
- Deep blue ground with silver overglaze; 17.5cm wide, 16.5cm tall

The crane in Japan carries one of the clearest symbolic meanings in the decorative arts: longevity, good fortune and marital harmony. Two cranes together double that meaning. Here they move through pine branches and clouds on a deep blue ground, the silver overglaze catching the light like moonlight on water.

Kutani-yaki (九谷焼) was first produced in the city of Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, in the mid-17th century and is designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy as a traditional craft. It is known for vivid overglaze enamel colours, gold accents and pictorial surfaces whose detail and richness are difficult to achieve in any other ceramic tradition. This vase uses a deep blue as the primary ground, with twin cranes (双鶴) painted in overglaze enamel and finished with a metallic overglaze accent. The rounded form with a flared mouth suits ikebana arrangements or fresh flowers, and is equally considered when left empty. The pictorial surface and auspicious symbolism make it a natural gift for a wedding, anniversary or significant celebration.
