A single plate that holds 400 years of history.

Created for the 400th anniversary of Arita porcelain in 2016, the ARITA ICON plate gathers 32 icons into one dense, exquisitely detailed illustration: 16 landmark sites and landscapes of the Arita region, and 16 tools essential to the making of porcelain kilns, brushes, throwing wheels, the famous Izumiyama quarry where Japan's first porcelain clay was discovered in 1616. The number is deliberate: 1616 makes sixteen the most significant number in Arita's 400-year story.

Rendered in classical sometsuke blue-and-white on high-fired Arita porcelain, this is an object that rewards close attention. Each viewing reveals a new detail. At 23.5cm, it works equally as a sharing plate and as a display piece propped on a shelf or dresser, it holds its own as an illustration.
