The small bowl that earns daily use is rarely the most impressive one on the shelf. It is the one that feels right every time you pick it up.
This is CHIPS Inc.'s Ancient Pottery bowl in the smaller size, made in Mino-yaki (美濃焼) of Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest ceramic region with over 1,300 years of continuous production. CHIPS was founded in 2016 to make tableware people reach for without thinking: handles that balance naturally, rims that meet the lip comfortably, glazes that look better as the table fills up. The Ancient Pottery finish is deliberately quiet, muted tones with a softly weathered quality and natural yuragi (揺らぎ) in the glaze, the gentle irregularities that mean no two pieces are quite identical. At 13.8cm wide and 5cm deep it works for side dishes, a small salad, fruit, or a dessert. The kind of bowl that quietly becomes indispensable.
