Gentle Cleaning: Hand-wash only using a soft sponge or cloth. Never use metal scourers, abrasive sponges, or harsh cleansing chemicals, as these will cause surface damage and weaken the glass.

Avoid Temperature Shocks: This glass is delicate and will crack under extreme temperature changes. Do not pour hot liquid into a cold vessel (or vice versa), and avoid placing heated glass on wet surfaces.

At Tappi Misaki, the northernmost cape of Honshu, hydrangeas bloom later than anywhere else in Japan. July, not June. The harsh coastal environment gives them a particular vigour, and the blues are deep.

Made by Tsugaruvidro (津軽びいどろ) in Aomori Prefecture using chu-buki (宙吹き), free-blowing without a mould, a technique stretching back to the first century BC. The craftsman blows and shapes each piece by hand, controlling colour distribution through the blowing process itself. The construction uses three layers: white coloured glass as the base, blue coloured glass and gold leaf applied on top, then a textured transparent outer layer over all of it. The gold leaf represents the shimmer of waves and the brightness of a Tsugaru summer. The depth of colour that results shifts as the light moves across the surface, so the vase reads differently through the day. The form narrows toward the top, holding stems upright or gathering a small cluster without them splaying. At 11cm wide and 18cm tall it has a substantial, grounded presence.
