At a glance
• Rich Kutani colours sit slightly raised above the porcelain, giving the decoration visible and tactile depth
• Traditional motifs bring meanings of resilience, longevity, prosperity and overcoming difficulties together at the table
• Compact, deeper form works naturally for rice, porridge, yoghurt, soup and smaller servings
These bowls are colourful from a distance, but the surface becomes more interesting when you look closer.
Seikou Kiln’s Kutani overglaze decoration retains a slight thickness above the porcelain rather than sitting completely flat. That gives the colour both visual depth and a subtle tactile presence when the bowl is held.
The patterns also carry more than decoration. Umekiku combines plum and chrysanthemum: plum is associated with vitality and resilience for flowering through the cold, while chrysanthemum has longstanding links with health and longevity. Ishidatami, the traditional stone-paving checkerboard, became associated with continuity, growth and prosperity because its repeating squares continue without interruption. Chidori shows plovers crossing waves together, an auspicious image associated with companionship, household harmony and overcoming difficulties side by side.
At approximately 11.5cm across and 6.5cm high, the compact form is naturally suited to rice, but also works for porridge, yoghurt and fruit, a small serving of soup, side dishes or dessert.
Selected patterns also connect with matching Seikou Kiln mugs, cups and plates, so the table can feel coordinated without every piece being identical.
