At a glance

• Chidori plovers crossing waves symbolise overcoming difficulties together
• Glossy Kutani colour sits slightly raised, giving the decoration tactile depth
• Three useful pieces carry one meaningful pattern across drinks, meals and smaller servings

This set includes:
1 x Seikou Kiln Kutani Ware Porcelain Plate, 21cm, Chidori
1 x Seikou Kiln Kutani Ware Porcelain Cup, 280ml, Chidori
1 x Seikou Kiln Kutani Ware Porcelain Rice Bowl, Chidori

Chidori gives this coordinated set a meaning beyond simply repeating the same pattern across three pieces.

The design shows small plovers crossing waves together. Known as nami chidori, the motif has long been associated with overcoming rough waters side by side, giving it particular resonance for a wedding, anniversary or new home.

Seikou Kiln's decoration has a physical presence too. Its glossy Kutani colours sit slightly raised from the porcelain, so the pattern can be felt as well as seen. The kiln develops its own glass-like overglaze pigments and produces the transfer sheets in-house before they are applied to each form by hand.

The set brings Chidori into three pieces that can be used regularly rather than saved for formal occasions. The 21cm plate works for breakfast, sandwiches, cake or a light meal; the 280ml cup suits tea or coffee; and the compact bowl works for rice, porridge, yoghurt, soup, dessert or smaller side dishes.

The shared motif keeps the setting visually connected while each piece still has a different everyday role.
