The scent of green tea before it is poured: a fresh, slightly roasted note, the faint grassiness of steamed leaf, a quiet umami quality that settles into gentle sweetness as the stick burns down. It is the most calming of the Kayuragi series, the one that most naturally accompanies a moment of stillness.

Kayuragi (かゆらぎ) is a modern incense series from Nippon Kodo (日本香堂), a house whose lineage traces to 1575 and the imperial court of Kyoto. The name joins kaori (香り, fragrance) with yuragi (揺らぎ, a gentle wavering), suggesting the way smoke drifts and transforms a room. Each slim stick burns for around 25 minutes with low, soft smoke, designed for everyday home use rather than ceremony. Nippon Kodo's production follows centuries-old methods: aromatic powders hand-kneaded into paste, rolled into slender sticks, dried naturally to preserve the oils.
