KOSHUHAI Porcelain Cup, Flowers, Birds, Wind and Moon, 300ml

At a glance

• Ka-chō-fū-getsu, “flowers, birds, wind and moon”, celebrates the changing beauty of nature
• Blue sometsuke decoration brings brush character and tonal variation across the white porcelain
• Rounded interior guides aroma upwards and keeps it circulating near the narrowed rim

Flowers, birds, wind and moon describe more than the four elements around this cup.

In Japanese, ka-chō-fū-getsu expresses an appreciation for the changing beauty of the natural world. It gives the decoration a meaning beyond simply being a blue and white pattern.

The design is rendered in sometsuke, using gosu pigment beneath the transparent glaze. Changes in brush pressure and pigment concentration create shifts from softer blue to deeper areas of colour, giving the imagery movement across the white Arita porcelain.

The KOSHUHAI form adds another dimension to the experience. Its rounded interior guides aroma upwards along the walls and keeps it circulating near the narrowed opening, bringing fragrance closer as you raise the cup.

The waisted body settles naturally between the fingers, while three small feet lift the base from the table. At 300ml, it works for whisky or shochu over ice as well as tea and coffee.

Made in Arita, Saga Prefecture.
