Most floral incense goes for one flower, precisely rendered. Cherry Blossoms takes the opposite approach: a blended, atmospheric floral rather than a single literal note, closer to a feeling than a flower pinned down exactly.

Each stick starts as a hand-kneaded paste on a base of white sandalwood, worked with natural woods, resins and herbs, then rolled thin and dried slowly. Kousaido, the Kyoto maker behind it, was founded in 1994 in the Karasuma district, continuing kōdō, the fragrance tradition the city has practised for over 400 years. The same sandalwood base is built to sit as easily in front of a household shrine as lit purely for pleasure.

Forty sticks come in the box, along with a small holder to burn them in.
