Microwave ✓

Wash with dish soap before first use. Soak in water before use so the piece absorbs moisture, reducing future staining. Avoid leaving acidic, oily, or strong flavoured foods or drinks sitting in it for extended periods, as this can cause staining, odour, or a sticky residue in the crackle. Microwave safe for general home use, excluding any accessories; residue can sometimes lodge in the crackle depending on the food type. Dry thoroughly before storing; incomplete drying can lead to mould.

The unglazed foot is deliberate, showing the raw clay; if it feels rough, it can be smoothed with sandpaper or a whetstone. Use a mat underneath on delicate surfaces.

Across the carafe and two cups, the glaze drifts between soft lavender and cream, with natural differences in colour and movement created during firing. Fine kannyū crackle runs through the surface too.

With repeated use, traces of liquid gradually enter those fine cracks and the porous ceramic, subtly changing its tone and character. This slow transformation is known as Hagi no nanabake, the “seven changes” of Hagi Ware.

That makes ageing part of the appeal rather than something the piece is expected to avoid. The 300ml carafe and two 70ml cups create a complete service for sharing warm or chilled sake, while the set gradually develops a character shaped by the occasions it has been used for.
