The rabbit motif has been used in Japanese decorative craft for centuries, associated with the moon, good fortune and a light, lively energy. On these chopsticks it sits alongside heart-shaped petals in fresh blue and red lacquer, giving the pair a warmth that suits both everyday use and the table set for guests.
Made in the Echizen Shikki (越前漆器) tradition of Fukui Prefecture, a lacquerware craft with roots stretching back over 1,500 years and designated by Japan's Ministry of Economy as a traditional craft. Echizen craftsmen have refined the balance, tip geometry and lacquer application of chopsticks for centuries, producing a surface that is smooth to the touch and slightly grippy enough for confident handling. The blue and red colourways are finished in urushi lacquer over a slim wooden body, producing a surface that is smooth to the touch with just enough grip to handle food confidently. Includes chopstick rests. A considered daily-use set or a practical gift.
