Care instructions

Clean gently with water and a soft sponge. If detergent is needed, use only a small amount of mild detergent and rinse thoroughly.

Allow the vase to dry fully before storing.

Bizen Ware is unglazed, so differences in colour, ash marks, iron spots and surface texture are natural characteristics of the firing rather than defects.

Special

At a glance

• Microporous unglazed Bizen clay helps flower water stay fresher, so cut stems can last longer
• Sangiri firing creates smoky grey, blue and earthy tones directly from flame and kiln atmosphere
• The unglazed surface gradually becomes smoother and develops more character with handling

There is no glaze hiding the clay on this vase. Its colour and markings are created by the wood-firing itself that lasted for days.

The Sangiri surface develops where changes in flame, ash and kiln atmosphere transform the Bizen clay into smoky greys, muted blues and warm earth tones. Because those conditions cannot be repeated exactly, every firing leaves a different pattern across the vase.

Bizen's unglazed body also has a practical quality that has long made it valued for flowers. Its fine pores help flower water stay in better condition, allowing cut stems to remain fresh for longer.

At 19.5cm high, the upright form works naturally with a few stems, grasses or a single branch without needing a full bouquet.

The vase continues to change after it leaves the kiln. With regular handling, the initially textured surface gradually feels smoother and develops a softer sheen, giving the piece more character the longer it is owned.

Made in Bizen by ceramic artist Hirokazu Shibaoka of Shusen Kiln.
