Care instructions

Microwave ✓

Wash with water or lukewarm water before first use.

Avoid sudden temperature extremes, such as moving it straight from fridge cold to boiling, or vice versa.

Do not use over direct flame or in an oven; microwave use is fine.

The base has been sanded smooth but can still mark delicate surfaces, so avoid dragging it across a table.

After use, remove any staining promptly, wash with ordinary washing up liquid, and dry thoroughly before storing.

Avoid metal scourers or abrasive sponges, as they can scratch the surface.

Special

At a glance

• Unglazed Bizen stoneware, with colour and markings created entirely by clay, red pine ash and flame
• Traditionally wood-fired over many days, with kiln position and flame producing a different surface on every piece
• Hand-formed and fired at Yumegenkobo’s Santen climbing kiln in Bizen City
• Compact 250ml size with a dry, tactile surface

There is no glaze or painted decoration deciding how this mug should look.

Bizen Ware is fired from clay alone, allowing flame, heat and ash to become the decoration. During firing, red pine ash settles on the surface and the movement of the fire creates shifts of rust, reddish brown, grey and darker tones. Where each piece sits inside the kiln changes the result, which is why no two mugs finish in the same way. This variation is one of the defining characteristics of Bizen Ware.

That surface takes time to create. Traditional Bizen wood firing can continue for roughly 10 to 15 days, with the kiln continually monitored and fed with split red pine as the temperature rises. The placement of each piece, the direction of the flame and the amount of ash it receives all influence the final appearance.

This mug comes from Yumegenkobo in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture. Its Santen Kiln uses a climbing kiln and is intended to carry forward the character of historic Bizen firing, working with clay, red pine, kiln structure and firing rather than relying on surface decoration.

The result is a mug that feels as distinctive as it looks. The unglazed stoneware has a dry, tactile surface, and because each one is hand-formed and individually affected by the kiln, small differences in shape, colour and markings are expected rather than corrected away.

At 250ml, it is slightly smaller than many modern mugs, making it well suited to tea or a regular coffee rather than an oversized drink.

Yumegenkobo's own stated aim is to keep pursuing the dream and vision of Bizen indefinitely, and the mug itself is left plain by design, so the fire's work stays the only decoration it needs.

At 250ml, it holds a proper mug's worth of coffee or tea.
