At a glance
• Natural bamboo grain and fibres remain clearly visible across the pale exterior
• The bamboo node forms the base, making the material's natural structure part of the cup
• Lightweight, low-conductivity bamboo stays comfortable with warm or cold drinks
This version keeps the bamboo itself at the centre of the design.
The exterior remains pale and lightly finished, allowing the fine vertical fibres, natural grain and changes around the bamboo node to stay visible. Inside, the finish takes on a warmer amber tone, giving the cup a subtle contrast between its lighter exterior and deeper interior.
The form follows the bamboo rather than disguising it. A section of the hollow stem becomes the body of the cup, while its natural node closes the base. The radial markings inside are therefore not an added pattern but part of the bamboo itself.
A translucent lacquer finish protects the surface while preserving that natural character. Instead of turning the bamboo into a uniform material, it leaves the differences in fibre, grain and tone visible from piece to piece.
Its lightness becomes especially noticeable when you use it. Bamboo transfers heat slowly, so warm tea or coffee remains comfortable to hold without a handle, while the same cup works naturally for water and other cold drinks. Takanochikko's bamboo cups are specifically made for both hot and cold use.
Made by Takanochikko in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto, where bamboo cultivation and techniques developed through tea utensils continue into objects designed for everyday use.
