MUSUBI Arita Ware Porcelain Plate, Good Fortune Knot, Red, 21cm

At a glance

• Interlocking Good Fortune Knot gives the plate a distinctive shape, not just surface decoration
• Hand-painted red lines carry a traditional wish for good fortune and good health
• Versatile dinner-plate size works for mains, salads, sandwiches and food for sharing

Most patterned plates place an illustration on a familiar round surface. This one turns the motif into the surface itself.

The plate follows the interlocking form of Kichijo Musubi, the Good Fortune Knot, associated with wishes for good fortune and health. Fine red lines trace the crossings of the white porcelain, making the knot readable both as decoration and as the structure of the plate.

The bold red gives it enough presence for birthdays, housewarmings and celebratory meals without restricting it to special occasions.

At 21cm, it is practical for an individual main, salad, sandwiches or pastries, and can move to the centre of the table for appetisers and smaller shared dishes.

The symbolism gives it meaning when first chosen or given; the useful size gives it a reason to keep returning to the table.
