Founded in 1910 in Namie, Fukushima Prefecture, Matsunaga Kiln began as a ceramics wholesaler before developing its own pottery production after the Second World War. Its work is rooted in Ōbori Sōma ware, a regional ceramic tradition with more than 300 years of history, known for its distinctive combination of decoration and practical craftsmanship.

The tradition is recognised by three characteristic features: aohibi, a fine network of crackles across the pale green glaze; hashirigoma, the running horse motif associated with good fortune; and futaeyaki, a double-wall construction that helps keep drinks warm while making the vessels comfortable to hold. Together, they give Ōbori Sōma ware a character that is recognisable both in appearance and everyday use.

Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear accident, Matsunaga Kiln was forced to leave its original home in Namie. The workshop re-established itself in Nishigō Village, where it continues to produce traditional Ōbori Sōma ware while developing new designs and collaborations. Its work today reflects a commitment to carrying the region's ceramic knowledge into the future.

At iromizu, our selection includes traditional double-walled cups, a sake set and the distinctive Eight Horses cup. Each offers a different way to enjoy Matsunaga's ceramics, whether chosen for everyday use, sharing a drink or marking an occasion.
