It is known above all for its vivid overglaze enamel colours and bold, pictorial surfaces that make each piece feel like a small painting. This sake cup carries the Aka-Fuji motif hand-painted in the overglaze enamel tradition by Yashiki Masato (谷敷正人) of Tansei Kiln (端成窯) in Komatsu City, Ishikawa. Yashiki is a full member of the Japan Kogei Association (日本工芸会), the body that oversees Japan's most rigorously assessed traditional craft practitioners, and has been selected multiple times for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (日本伝統工芸展), the most prestigious national platform for traditional craft. The vivid reds and warm tones of the mountain are applied by brush before firing, the brushwork intimate rather than formal. It suits sake poured slowly, or sencha on a quiet morning.
