Kōusaidō (香彩堂) is a Kyoto-based incense maker founded in 1994 in the city's Karasuma district, rooted in kōdō (香道) — the classical Japanese art of fragrance appreciation. Kyoto has been Japan's spiritual home for incense-making for over four centuries, and Kōusaidō draws on that heritage whilst developing fragrances for contemporary life. The company's guiding principle — bringing colour, healing, and richness to daily life through scent — shapes everything from their choice of raw materials to the way each stick is dried.

Production begins with hand-kneading aromatic pastes built on a base of white sandalwood, blending natural woods, resins, and herbs into recipes designed to evolve as they burn — an opening note that lifts, a middle that settles, and a lingering base that stays in the room long after the stick has finished. Kōusaidō sources rare woods like aloeswood (沈香 jinkō) through long-standing relationships with Awaji Island blenders, and each premium line is mixed in small batches to preserve the subtlety of the scent profile. The sticks are rolled thin and dried naturally to protect the volatile oils within.

At iromizu, Kōusaidō's incense is the heart of our Calm Interval collection — the ritual of lighting a stick, watching the smoke curl, and letting the afternoon slow down. Whether you are drawn to the mossy stillness of Arashiyama or the warm sweetness of Kyoto sandalwood, each box is an invitation to pause. Discover the range below.
